Dietary folate intake in lactating mothers linked with improved gut-health of infants: Study

Consuming folates in the diet can improve the gut health of infants in lactating mothers, according to researchers. Folate, a vitamin-B found in cereal products, vegetables, legumes, and fruits, increases the potential of Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) in breastmilk, which protect premature babies against necrotising enterocolitis. HMOs have multiple positive effects on infant health. The study also found that alcohol consumption was associated with decreased levels of certain HMOs.
