Study shows eye scans offer important information regarding kidney health
Researchers have found that 3D eye scans using optical coherence tomography (OCT), supported by Heidelberg Engineering's imaging platform, can provide vital information about kidney health. These scans offer a non-invasive and quick way to monitor kidney disease by detecting changes to the retina, which is affected in kidney disease. The study, funded by Kidney Research UK and published in Nature Communications, showed that patients with chronic kidney disease had thinner retinas compared to healthy volunteers, and thinning of the retina progressed as kidney function declined.
