Mexican gray wolves boost their numbers, but a lack of genetic diversity remains a threat

The wild population of Mexican gray wolves in the southwestern U.S. is growing, but inbreeding and genetic crisis are threats to their survival. Environmental groups urge improved policies and more releases of captive wolves for genetic diversity. Pups from captivity and fostered wolf pups are part of genetic management.
